Our Languages, Our Way
Our Languages, Our Way supports respectful use of Aboriginal Languages by providing practical advice to organisations. The guidelines have been developed in partnership with Aboriginal Language Specialists and Language Custodians.
During consultation on the Trust’s Strategic Plan, Aboriginal Language Communities expressed the need for more community-focused resources to support Languages work on the ground, including guidance for Aboriginal Language use across NSW.
The guidelines outline agreed and interconnected principles that may vary across communities, including:
- Community Engagement: The right people are engaged with sufficient time and resources available.
- Cultural Integrity: Community ownership and cultural meaning is respected.
- Aboriginal Led: Aboriginal led from start to finish with Community as the final approver.
- Truth Telling and Healing: Colonisation’s impacts are acknowledged, and healing pathways are created.
- Reciprocity: Contributions are compensated, and there is an ongoing relationship and support for Language revitalisation.
